Qingcheng Back Mountain Overview⛰️

Qingcheng Back Mountain is situated behind Qingcheng Mountain in Taian Township, approximately 70 kilometers from Chengdu, with a total area of about 100 square kilometers. It borders the Wolong Nature Reserve to the northwest and connects with Zhaogong Mountain to the northeast.

Paths to the east lead to Tianshi Cave and Jianfu Palace, while it shares a boundary with Liuding and Tianguo Mountains to the southwest. Despite being part of the Qingcheng Mountain range, it remained largely hidden until development began in the 1980s, adding an air of mystery to its natural beauty.

Natural Climate🌤️

The weather in Qingcheng Mountain falls within the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone. In spring, temperatures can vary significantly, averaging between 12 to 20 degrees Celsius, with a warm and humid climate. Summer sees a gradual increase in temperature, averaging between 21 to 30 degrees. Autumn is crisp and clear, with average temperatures dropping to 14 to 20 degrees in October. Winters are cooler, averaging between 5 to 10 degrees, with occasional snowfall that rarely accumulates.

Taian Ancient Town⛩️

Located in Qingcheng Back Mountain, Taian Ancient Town has a long history and has always been a vital transport hub on the “Huaping Old Road” leading from Chengdu to Jinchuan. During the Tang Dynasty, it was known as Weijiangzhai; in the Song Dynasty, it was established as Weijiang Township and later Weijiang Town. By the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Taian Town, based on the ancient Taian Temple.

Historically, Taian was a central trading point for goods between Maowen, Jinchuan, and the suburbs of Chengdu, bustling with commerce. Today, it serves as a gathering place for visitors exploring Qingcheng Back Mountain, offering food, accommodation, and entertainment. The picturesque town features ancient wooden structures lining its streets, with the Weijiang River flowing around it, preserving its historic charm.

Crystal Cave 💎

Located in the semi-cavernous region of “Three Caves Water” in Qingcheng Back Mountain, also known as “Three Dragon Crystal Cave,” it formed between 10 to 30 million years ago under unique geological conditions, resulting in a stunning limestone cave. The cave consists of three levels, showcasing a remarkable array of natural formations.

With a depth of several kilometers and a visitor pathway of about one kilometer, it features an underground river, allowing visitors to experience both the cave’s scenery and its springs. The path is lined with colorful lighting that illuminates the cave’s stalactites, stalagmites, and stone flowers, creating a dreamlike atmosphere and inviting exploration.

Wuyun Ten Thousand Buddha Cave

Situated at the midpoint of Yinghua in Qingcheng Back Mountain, this area features hundreds of natural caves scattered along the cliffs, stretching about 3 kilometers from north to south. Legend has it that during the Tang Dynasty, Master Baiyun meditated here and attained enlightenment.

This complex of caves, known collectively as “Baiyun Cave,” was historically a significant site for Buddhist practitioners, producing many renowned monks. The caves house famous sites such as Guanyin Cave, Tongtian Cave, Dizang Cave, Jiusi Cave, as well as the magnificent Baiyun Temple and Guanyin Hall, with over two thousand Buddhist statues, earning the title of “Wuyun Ten Thousand Buddha Cave.

Double Spring Waterfall⛲

Located in Feiquan Valley in Qingcheng Back Mountain, this natural wonder features a series of stunning landscapes, including a sky bridge, dressing pool, and waterfall, creating a mesmerizing scene. The double waterfall is formed where two springs converge, with the front waterfall originating from the dressing pool and cascading like a silver curtain, while the back waterfall flows down the valley, resembling a silver dragon soaring down into the depths.

The cave is filled with shimmering pools and speleothems, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Ancient corridors and wooden bridges offer views of the valley below, where mist swirls among the trees, enhancing the enchanting atmosphere.

Longyin Gorge Boardwalk⛲

Located in the mid-section of Wulong Valley in Qingcheng Back Mountain, the Longyin Gorge Boardwalk gets its name from the legend of a dragon from Weijiang hiding in the gorge. This ancient path was part of the route to Jinchuan and was originally constructed from wooden stakes.

It has now been reconstructed in steel and concrete, spanning approximately 600 meters, resembling a hidden dragon within the gorge. Stone steps, pathways, and hanging bridges intertwine through the landscape. The views along the path feature steep cliffs and vibrant greenery, creating a picturesque and serene experience.

Wulong Valley

Wulong Valley, historically known as Manhe, stretches for 8 kilometers in Qingcheng Back Mountain. According to legend, it was named after five divine dragons that once dwelled in the valley. Following the winding path, visitors encounter breathtaking peaks and deep ravines.

The area features scenic spots such as Jinwawa Tuo, the Longyin Gorge Boardwalk, echo walls, and spectacular views like Wulong Qiangbao, White Dragon Spouting Water, and water-reflecting rainbows. The valley is adorned with azaleas, camellias, laurel, and wild chrysanthemums, resembling a magical and majestic fairyland.

Three Pools Mist Spring🌌

Located in the mid-section of Wulong Valley, this site comprises three pools, a spring cave, Longbao Rock, and an echo wall. The three pools, known as “Jinwawa Tuo,” are formed by streams flowing into rock formations, with legends suggesting that celestial beings played in these waters.

The three waterfalls cascade majestically, creating a spectacular sight. Above the pools, a cave allows water to burst forth, enveloping the area in mist that flows into the pools below. Nearby, the echo wall enhances the experience with reverberating sounds, and to the left, Longbao Rock boasts five mountain ridges stretching outward, creating the wonder known as “Wulong Qiangbao.”

Taian Temple🏯

Located in the ancient town of Taian in Qingcheng Back Mountain, Taian Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Qingcheng Mountain. Historical texts indicate it was first established during the Tang Dynasty and flourished during the Ming Dynasty. Since ancient times, it has been a revered destination for Buddhist followers and a center for Buddhist teachings.

The temple has undergone numerous renovations and now features significant structures such as the Mahavira Hall, Heavenly King Hall, and Avalokiteshvara Hall. Among its treasures are three ancient steles from the Qing Dynasty, and the temple gate bears the inscription “Ancient Taian Temple,” hand-carved by Zhao Puchu, a former president of the Chinese Buddhist Association.

The temple is surrounded by ancient trees, creating an ethereal environment that serves as an excellent place for devotees to practice Buddhism and seek tranquility.

Historical and Cultural Significance⚜️

Qingcheng Mountain is renowned as a sacred site of Taoism, being one of its origins. It is said that Zhang Daoling, the founder of Tianshi Dao, attained enlightenment here, leading Qingcheng Mountain to become the ancestral mountain of the Tianshi Dao, attracting generations of followers who come to pay their respects.
