Hainan Visa-Free Policy
Since May 1, 2018, the visa-free policy has been expanded to include citizens from 59 countries. If you’re from one of these countries, you can enter Hainan through any of its open ports—by plane, cruise, or other means—and stay for up to 30 days, starting from 12:00 AM on the second day after your arrival.

South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Indonesia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates

For your convenience, we recommend entering Hainan through one of the following four ports: Haikou Meilan Airport, Sanya Phoenix Airport, Haikou Port, or Sanya Port.
What to Prepare for Visa-Free Entry
Passport

When passing through customs, you may be asked to provide copies of your hotel reservation, round-trip flight or cruise tickets, and other travel-related documents.
How to Apply for a Port Visa in Hainan
In China, the Visa-on-Arrival is also known as a port visa. If you’re planning to travel to Hainan and then visit other cities in mainland China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Xi’an, you’ll need to apply for a port visa. Please note that port visas are only available for group tours of two or more people and must be arranged through an authorized travel agency.


Essential Methods for a Port Visa
A valid passport or another recognized international travel document.
A completed application form for a foreigner’s port visa.
A passport-sized photo, or you can have one taken at the visa office.
- A detailed itinerary of your mainland China tour, along with confirmation documents from your travel agency.
Where to Apply for a Port Visa
You can submit your application at the following entry points: Haikou Meilan Airport, Sanya Phoenix Airport, Haikou Port, and Sanya Port. Alternatively, you can have your travel agency submit the required materials on your behalf.
Valid Period of Port Visa
The port visa is valid for a single entry. For travel purposes, once the visa takes effect, you can visit mainland China for up to 15 days and stay for a maximum of 30 days.
Other FAQs about Hainan Visa Policy
Can I travel to Hainan alone without a visa?
Yes, you can travel alone. However, if you plan to visit other cities in mainland China, you will need to join a group tour (with at least two people) and apply for a port visa.Can I visit Tibet with the port visa obtained in Hainan?
No. You will still need a Tibet Travel Permit, which is required for group travel to Tibet, as well as a Military Area Entry Permit for certain “military-sensitive” areas in Tibet.- I am transiting through Hainan and want to explore the island. Do I need a visa?
If you’re from one of the 59 countries listed above, you do not need a visa to transit through Hainan, and you can enjoy your trip there. If you’re not from one of these countries, you can still enter Hainan without a visa but are limited to staying at the arrival port for no more than 24 hours.
